Ball Complete Book of Home Preserving

We’re heading into the home stretch of summer. Yes, I hate to say it, but, it’s true. This is also the time of year that our garden’s are overflowing with a hopefully huge harvest. I know that I’ve been getting a few nice ripe tomatoes already.

We would all like to preserve the goodness of summer as long as possible. So why not try your hand at a little home canning? I know I’ve considered it. I haven’t pulled the trigger yet. But, I have at least investigated some of the options.

We’ve posted this month’s Cookbook Man’s Cookbook Calendar. There are some great new releases that you’ll want to have for your very own. Also, a current August Best Sellers list is up for your perusal and comment.

June 1st signals the first day of summer for me. I know that some of you will wait until the actual Summer Solstice on June 20th, but, I’m starting my celebration now. There’s no reason to voluntarily shorten the season by twenty days.

And, with the start of summer, comes all of the cookbook releases that are warm weather related. You’ve got it, grilling. That’s right, barbecue cookbooks will top the list as a culinary genre for the next couple of months. So, you’ll need to have your tongs and full supply of charcoal if you’re going to take advantage of everything the summer cooking season has to offer.

We have posted our June 2012 Cookbookman’s Cookbook Calendar, along with the updated best sellers list for the month. Just in case you would like to get a jump on the grilling, we’ve graciously provided you with a few summer selections to light your fire.

The Best Cookbook Lists Just Keep on Coming

I know it’s that time of year. But, I’m already suffering from a case of Best Burnout. Best cookbook posts are everywhere. I’m not suggesting that these aren’t well written and thoughtful pieces. It’s just that there’s a swarm of them.

I was hoping to write a post highlighting some of my own choices for the best cookbooks of 2011. But, I’m not sure I really want to be just tossed on top of the already heaping pile of posts. I almost feel obligated. After all, the name of this site is cookbookman.com.  I’ll think about it and get back to you.

In the meantime, there were a bunch of best lists posted in the past week or so. You can check out some of the selections right here. Of course, there are some regular, old fashioned cookbook reviews mixed in there too.

November 1st is the BIG day this week. A ton of books are out that day.

Included on Tuesday, is the digital edition of Linda McCartney’s Vegetarian Home Cooking. This book was originally published in 1992. Back then, the vegetarian culinary lifestyle is nowhere near what it is today. Looking back on it, Linda’s book was groundbreaking. It brought attention to what was then considered a fringe lifestyle.

Also notable this week are entries by John Besh, Kim Ima and a bunch of good looking books on baking.

The last full week of October 2011 brings a couple of much anticipated releases to the cookbook market. And, six of those on our release list are eBooks. That’s the most of any week to date. I think we can safely say that digital cookbooks have moved beyond the novelty stage.

Bryan and Michael Voltaggio of Top Chef fame are out with Volt ink. It’s been hyped (hard to believe, right?). So, I’m sure it will be a big launch day fav.

Emeril Lagasse’s Skillets and Other One-Pot Wonders has been digitized and is available for download this week. At $18.99, it’s at the very top of the eBook price range. The paperback edition hit shelves back in September.

I’m not sure what is so special about October 4th. But, something is. No less than sixteen cookbooks are slated for release that day. Coincidence? Maybe.

One of the highlights this week is the release of, The Family Meal: Home Cooking with Ferran Adria, This is a truly amazing cookbook. It has recipes and food photography that leaves most other books in the dust. This is a must have for any serious or semi-serious home chef. A great look at what the staff gets to eat at one of the worlds best restaurants, elBulli.

Also, this week marks a milestone of sorts for the eBook market. Julia Child’s culinary epic, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume 1, is out for the Kindle. Since Julia was a pioneer in bringing cooking to TV, it’s only fitting that her 1961 classic helps usher in the digital age of cookbooks.

This week William Morrow Cookbooks is releasing a new title by Emeril Lagesse, Sizzling Skillets and Other One-Pot Wonders. Emeril is one celebrity chef who has figured out how to write a great cookbook. There’s no doubt his latest effort will be just as well received as his previous releases.
